So how do I KNOW that I have zeroed in on the will of God?

If an issue is expressly addressed in the Word, elicited to the surface through the wise counsel of godly and mature Believers, or if it is the thought pattern that seems to have come into focus as I discuss the issues with Father, then I conclude that I understand what the will of God is.

(Speaking of discussion—with anyone, but especially with God—may I remind you that discussion is both talking and listening. And with that said, it is important to remember: God in His wisdom gave us one mouth and two ears).

Expanding this some, if God goes to the trouble to parallel His relationship with us to marriage and friendship and family—which He does repeatedly and frequently in His Word—then it seems safe to assume the communication He wishes to engage us in is similar to the communication inherent in marriage, friendship, and family.

Think about the conversations you have: The important, intimate relationships in your life occur over meals, sitting around the fire, before the lights are out at night, in the car, about big matters, small issues, happy things, sad things, etc. Communication with Father should occur in similar fashion... and with the confidence that if He has something to say, He will do so, just as I assume my wife, friend, or kids will do.

If I have been listening and talking over a period of time and a change of course is not evident, then I must conclude that Father is pleased with the direction I am headed and continue walking, talking, listening, and enjoying the journey.
