How Do I Know If I Am In Love? (Conclusion, Part 5)

Thought number eight: The most important I have saved for last. You simply must have time alone to pray and ask your Heavenly Father what He thinks of love and the person you are pondering.

Prayer is not only talking with God—although this is certainly part of it—but it is also listening to God. Our Father says in Scripture, "Be still and know that I am God."

So, be still. Get away from the person you are dating, engaged to, in love with, etc.—even your spouse. Be by yourself, not once in awhile, or for 10 minutes, but for extended periods of time on a regular basis. Listen.

Learn through time spent with God what the sound of His voice sounds like. Always, always, always measure what you hear against the Word of God. Should you ever "hear" anything that contradicts the clear instruction of Scripture, be assured: You did not hear from God. He will not contradict Himself or mislead you.

Remember, love does not get in a hurry. If you believe you have found the right person, God agree with you, He will let you know, confirm it by the counsel of others, and give you great confidence in your heart. No judgment call here.

Armed with this awareness, you can commit the rest of your days and all that you are and hope to be into the hands of another person. In this, you will find and recognize love.

Bottom line: Love is a commitment of the heart that will stand the test of wavering emotions, intellectual rationalizing, circumstantial allure, and hormonal infatuation. How do I know this? Because the Scripture says so: "The greatest of these is love" (1 Cor. 13:13).
