Failure and Recovery (Part 3)

Step 2: Refocus.

The second step in recovering from failure is to refocus on what you know. This is what the Bible calls setting your mind. (Philippians 4:8; Colossians 3:2 et. al.) It is to be done with resolute determination and repetitious effort while depending upon your Father for strength.

Here are the facts:

  • Your story is about a great battle between God and the devil. Your heart wants to engage with your Father against the enemy forces in what has proven to be the classic struggle between good and evil where you are the potential hero.
  • While it is true you have just taken an enemy strike, you have the training and resources to refocus on the truth.

Here is what you know:

  • Your strength is realized through depending on your Heavenly Father.
  • You are accepted and forgiven in Christ who is your source and constant companion. He is your marching partner in the phalanx of spiritual warfare.
  • Your significance is not in how well you perform but is anchored in Christ.
  • Your security is in Him and with other men who will help you guard your heart and look out for your weakness. This means you are free to be yourself and stand with masculine confidence.
  • And by your Father's grace, you will hold your station in life until further notice.

These facts must be etched into your mind and written on your heart. It is imperative that you refocus on what you know. Regardless of why failure comes, a man must return to the essential fundamentals, regain his bearings, and refocus on the truth.

Step 3: Remind

The third step in recovering from failure is to remind yourself what your station in life is. A man is a corner post, anchored in the solid rock of Jesus Christ and tied together with other men. His position is carrying out redemption and blessing.

One final word: I encourage you, don't be afraid of failure. Be afraid of not trying. I remind you again of Teddy Roosevelt's words, “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.”
