The Curse of the Capable
How easy it is for those blessed with capability, competence, talent, success, and initiative to base their identity on achievements and accolades. Our Heavenly Father values the work of our hands, but he is interested in the motive driving what we do. He appeals to us as sons, longs for a connection between His heart and ours, and blesses us because we are His, not because of what we do for Him. Herein lies the great secret to significance.
Jesus Christ knew who He was and that He was loved by His Father. You can, and must, know both of these things as well. Your significance must be anchored in your identification with your Father. This is the footing, the cement mix at the base of the corner post.
The enemy will make every effort to deceive you into developing your own system of achieving significance apart from your identity in Christ. These patterns of independent behavior are what the Bible calls “flesh,” and because they are conceived in independence, they are sin. The flesh is not capable of defining our true identity for us or establishing that we are loved by our Father. Your significance is not in your capabilities but in your Father's love.
